Suggest Films for Review!

Hello everyone!

If you can think of a film that you'd like me to review, old or new, just comment on this post with your suggestions. If I've seen it before, I'll re-watch. If I haven't, I love watching new films! I look forward to reading your suggestions and watching, watching, watching.

  2. Daniel, you're going to review Pacific Rim when it comes out, right? I'm curious as to your opinion on how it lives up to the hype and Del Toro's other films

Also, this blog is really great. Your voice really comes through and it feels like you are just talking to me.

  4. Hi Daniel!
I've got a challenging piece for you to review: Amour by Michael Haneke.
Many critics say that it's one of those brilliant films that they can't bear to watch twice. It's dreary, yet very powerful. I wonder what are your thoughts on it?
Keep up the good work here!

  5. Hey Mimi!
So nice to hear from a fellow Trojan! I'm glad you like the site. I did see Amour and definitely have some thoughts to share... I'll have the review up by the end of the day.
Thanks for the suggestion! Feel free to suggest as many as you wish!

  6. On the topic of Del Toro, what did you think about Pan's Labyrinth?

  7. I really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth. It was a fairytale unlike any that's been made before or since. There were characters instantly etched into our memories (eye on the palm, for instance) and any film that can become a recognized art form almost immediately is deserving of respect. It was a healthy balance of violence and childlike wonder. Filmmaking wise, far superior to Pacific Rim. A few years (and many re-watches) will have to pass until we can decide which is more entertaining. What did you think? Did you see Pacific Rim?

  8. I did see Pacific Rim the other night. I do agree that Pan's Labyrinth was a more sophisticated, emotionally intense experience than Pacific Rim was. However, I find it difficult to compare the films aforementioned. I see the two movies as representative of the scope of GDT's imagination; both are meant to accomplish different things. Fans of "haute cinema" will undoubtedly find Pan's Labyrinth to be a better movie, while more casual movie goers will probably enjoy Pacific Rim more. The way I see it, both movies are of equal merit when examined within their respective genres; Pacific Rim wholly succeeds in fulfilling its intended purpose, as set forth by GDT. The same goes for Pan's Labyrinth. I generally don't like to imagine some movie genres as higher than others, because all can be equally entertaining if done correctly. So, to answer your question about which is more entertaining, I think it really just depends on the mood I am in.

  9. I agree with you. Del Toro is an incredibly visual and obviously passionate filmmaker so his work is consistently well made. I'll put up a formal Flashback Review of Pan's Labyrinth sometime in the next few days, so keep an eye out. What else have you seen recently? Anything I've reviewed? I have new ones going up the whole weekend.

  10. While I have not yet seen any of the films which you have reviewed (apart from Pacific Rim), I recently watched something worth mentioning: Cloud Atlas. Judging by many reviews it appears to be very polarizing. Fortunately, at the conclusion of the film I found myself very positive. What I enjoyed most about this movie was its ability to tell multiple stories at once. Each was unique enough to stand on its own, but when put together they revealed a common thread and deeper meaning; if they were separate entities this meaning would have been lost. I believe this film will be remembered more positively in the coming years due to its ambition and imagination. What did you think of it.? Do you hope to see more movies sporting a similar style in the future?

  11. I liked it more than most that I've spoken to. In fact, a lot of people are amazed that I sat through the entire thing, let alone enjoyed it. I thought it was wonderfully executed, I was consistently engaged, and I thought that the acting (for the most part) was fun and engaging. More than anything, I thought that its scope and sheer ambitious nature were its most powerful attributes. Any film that wants to tackle that much, a la The Tree of Life, garners respect at the very least regardless of entertainment value. I think that filmmakers who want to push the boundaries of acceptable cinema and setting and time and expand the capabilities of an audience member to include thinking are doing the industry a much needed service.
